A simple congratulatory note

Just one thing to say today about the looming ban on plastic bags in major supermarkets and pharmacies in San Francisco:

Congratulations to San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors for having the guts to do the right thing.

Now, if only the rest of the country would follow their lead.

There is a big move in the UK too for trying to reduce the number of disposable carrier bags. Sainsburys one of our large supermarkets has been doing a lot to advocate reusable bags such as having one designed by a well know designer, and giving away reusable bags last weekend. A lot of it is coming from pressure from the consumer, now we just have to get the product manufacturers to reduce the amount of packaging!

Thats interesting, we’ve had a Plastic bag levy of 19c (about $0.30c) per bag in Ireland for about 5 years now. It’s worked really well in my experience, the first few weeks were littered with people remarking how rarely they actually *need* plastic bags :)
