Commenting snafu

For some ungodly reason, WordPress has been holding perfectly legit comments for approval. I discovered this earlier today and have since approved quite a few comments posted by people who were probably wondering why they were being ignored.

If you’re one of these people, I apologize. I’ll do better.

I’ve now WordPress to email me whenever a comment is held for moderation. This means I’ll have to delete quite a few spam comments, but it’ll be worth it to ensure the real stuff gets through.

Thanks for understanding.

Hi Robert,

You should try Akismet — it is a Wordpress plugin that automatically filters out comment spam by comparing comments against known spam in its database.

I have been using it for a few months and it has saved me from having to deal with nearly 200 spam comments.

I can leave moderation switched off and I haven’t had a single false positive yet.

To cut down on the spam email, you might try the WP plugin Spam Karma – you can set some parameters for scoring good/bad comments via an WP admin settings panel and I think you can even let it auto-approve and post comments with decent ratings.

I’m already using Akismet, but I haven’t heard of Spam Karma, so I’ll have to check that out.

Thanks for the tip!

I’m guessing the amount of traffic you’re site gets is several orders of magnitude greater than mine :)
